Warriors lacked defense against Laguna Hawks
The Socorro Warriors are making strides in their running game – teamwork is up; they seem more comfortable with their plays, and are marching down the field. They are running!
Their 24-51 loss last Friday night can be chalked up, to a large extent, to their lack of a strong defense. It’s a young team, playing against some bigger, more experienced boys.
“We knew their quarterback was fast,” coach Cody Lee said of the game against the Hawks. “We did a good job keeping up, but didn’t get the tackles.”
Coach Lee said that the coaching staff is responsible for not teaaching the kids how to tackle well.
“The kids did everything we asked them to do last week,” Lee said. “We were in the right place at the right time, but just didn’t get the job done.”
Coach Lee also said they have had an issue with getting started in the first quarter this year.
“Once we start playing we start having fun and then get things done on the field,” Lee said. “We are working on getting the team revved up to play in the first quarter.”
The Warriors are young team, and have struggled a little with suspensions due to grades. As a result, some of the youngest members of the team are having to “step up” and play varsity for the first time, which is having an impact on the game. Overall, the team is growing and developing at a reasonable rate, Lee says.
“We are right where we need to be,” said Lee. “We aren’t going to give up on the kids, and the kids aren’t giving up. Hopefully the parents and fans won’t give up on us, either.”
