4-H Rodeo ends season with some top winners

Socorro County’s Chazlin LeSueur took first place in breakaway roping for the 4-H rodeo season, and second place as the heeler in team roping. Charles Perkins, also of Socorro County, was the first-place steer rider. Jorrell Mirabal of Yucca 4-H in Magdalena brought home second-place awards for ribbon roping, breakaway roping and calf roping, and Melissa Gabaldon with Tumbleweed 4-H of Socorro came home with third place in ribbon roping, among other awards.

Socorro County 4-H members in rodeo have participated at 4-H sanctioned rodeos in Grant, Catron, Quay, Sierra, Dona Ana Socorro and Cibola counties throughout the summer. The 4-Hers competed in a variety of events, from steer riding to goat tying, barrel racing to various roping events. Melissa Gabaldon and Chazlin LeSueur with Tumbleweed 4-H Club in Socorro, and Jorrell Mirabal and Jaxson Mirabal with Yucca 4-H Club in Magdalena were the season’s all-around and average winners for the season. “These kids have worked hard all summer practicing and participating to qualify for the state finals where they competed against other kids from around the state,” Jessica Smith,

Socorro County Extension Service County Program Director/Agent said in an email. “Socorro County was well represented everywhere they went and had a successful rodeo season!”

Novice age group:

Charles Perkins — Steer riding, second place

Joren Mirabal — Breakaway Roping, 11th place; Goat Tying, 20th place; Pole Bending, 14th place

Jaxson Mirabal — Breakaway Roping, fifth place; Goat Tying, sixth place; Step Down Roping, sixth place; Pole Bending, fifth place

Junior Age Group:

Jorrell Mirabal — ribbon roping, second place; breakaway roping, second place; calf roping, second place; team roping, heading, sixth place

Chazlin LeSueur — breakaway boping, first place; pole bending, sixth place; goat tying, seventh place; team roping (heeling), second place

Melissa Gabaldon — ribbon roping, third place; team roping (heading), fourth place; goat tying, fifth place; breakaway roping, sixth place

Kathryn Wellborn — barrel racing, eighth place; breakaway roping, 14th place; pole bending, seventh place; goat tying, ninth place

Throughout the summer the Socorro County kids also won many other prizes and checks at rodeos leading up to the finals:

Jorrell Mirabal — junior all-around saddle winner in Sierra County; breakaway average buckle winner in Quay County; ribbon roping average buckle winner in Sierra County; and tie-down calf roping average buckle in Catron County.

Jaxson Mirabal — Grant County all-around buckle winner

Chazlin LeSueur — finals weekend- average winner in pole bending; Socorro County average buckle winner in breakaway roping; Sierra County average buckle winner in team roping (heeling); and Sierra County average buckle winner in breakaway roping.

Melissa Gabaldon — Sierra County average buckle winner in team roping (heading) and Socorro County all-around winner of custom spurs.
