Lady Steers pull off tough win
It was a battle until the end for the Lady Steers last Friday against the Estancia Bears. They won 3-2 in five closely matched sets after the final score of 17-15 in the fifth set. The leadership is spread fairly evenly throughout the team of mostly seniors. Senior Tristen Dunlap led attacking with nine kills, 1.8 per set.
Kadie Kiehne, a senior, led the team in serving with a 95.2 percent success rate, and 14.3 percent aces; Kiehne also led the team in serve recieves with 30 receives and only seven errors, and in digs, with a total of 14, or an average of 2.8 per set. Danielle Gordon, another senior, was the ball handling leader, having 58 ball handling attempts and a single error. Gordon had 15 assists, an average of three per set. Senior Ashley Tafoya also ranked highly in the areas of serving, with 11 points and a 95.2 percent success rate, and with 12 digs, about 2.4 per set. Breann Baca led the team with seven blocks — five solo, and also had seven attacks with a 35 percent success rate.
This is a fun team to watch play volleyball. They communicate well; they back each other up on every play – every block, attack and dig. They celebrate their success, support each other after mistakes and have fun on the court.
The Estancia Bears put up a fight, also showing great team sportsmanship and great communication. Set scores were 25-22(w), 23-25(l), 25-18(w), 21-25(l) and 1-15(w). Districts start in about two weeks. The Lady Steers’ next conquest is Jemez Valley this afternoon at 4 p.m. in Jemez Valley.
