HARPER — It is with a heavy heart we announce Judith Harper, 72, most recently of Magdalena, passed away with family by her side Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, after a courageous battle with uterine cancer. She was born in Scranton, Pa., spending her youth there. She graduated from Scranton Central High School, attended East Stroudsburgh University and graduated from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Montclair, N.J.
Judith met Steve Slepian when they were camp counselors and wait staff in the Catskills. She later moved to New York City where she married Steve on May 26, 1966. After the birth of two children and wonderful times in Great Neck, Long Island, the family moved to Arizona in 1978 with a short stop along the way in Northridge, Calif. During this period she touched many lives as a marriage and family therapist, receiving her master’s in counseling from Arizona State University. She was a past president of the Arizona Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
Steve and Judith divorced in 1986. Through her love of the outdoors she met her soulmate, Paul Loebner, formally of Litchfield, Minn. She and Paul married Oct. 14, 2005, in their backyard on Pinchot in a historic district of Phoenix, and the adventures of a lifetime began. She lived a life full of adventure, her love for the outdoors ever apparent. She raised llamas for a time, but hiking was her passion; she blazed trails across the U.S., Europe and Central America. One of her greatest accomplishments was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. Most recently she and Paul undertook the Eastern Loop on their boat Tranquillo. Unfortunately, the trip was cut short by recurrent disease.
Judith was a crossword puzzle fanatic and jigsaw puzzle master. When visiting the grandkids she was often teaching a new card game or working a puzzle.
Judith always had, as she said, the “Harper can do” attitude and was a tireless worker. No project was too big. Most recently she and Paul lived on their property outside of Magdalena, so appropriately titled “Almost-a-Ranch.”
She is survived by her loving husband, Paul Loebner, of Magdalena; brothers Brooks Harper and Ben Harper, of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and Clarks Summit, Pa.; son Mark Slepian, M.D., and daughter-in-law Laurie Slepian, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; daughter Raquel Clark and son-in-law Dan Clark, of Alamo, Calif.; stepson Chris Loebner and Sondra, of Las Vegas, Nev.; stepdaughter Andrea Hall and Roger Hall of Mesa, Ariz.; and grandchildren Kaitlin, Katie, Lauren, Haley, Jake, Olivia and Tyler. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Harper and Marion Brooks Harper.
We wish Judith safe travels and a steady foot on her latest journey as she is now off hiking the trails she never made it to and re-hiking the ones she loved. As you always said, “Life is an adventure — follow your dreams.”
Arrangements for a celebration of life event are pending. In lieu of flowers the family has requested for donations to be made to the Magdalena Public Library, P.O. Box 86, Magdalena, NM 87825-0086; 505-854-2361.
