Socorro school district uses golf tourney money for employee benefits
The Socorro Consolidated School District held a golf tournament Oct. 26 at New Mexico Tech Golf Course to raise money for a fund that provides for recognition, appreciation and support for SCSD employees.
Tournament results are:
• First-place team: Terry Bessette, Rudy Fajardo, Mike O’Malley and Mel Peterson, all of Albuquerque, with a score of 57. Each golfer won $50 for their win.
• Second-place team: Leroy Anaya, Sefie Anaya, Gilbert Peralta and Roscoe Woods, all from the Socorro area, with a score of 58. Golfers in second place received $30 each.
• Third-place team: Scott Crespin, Mike Olguin, David Monette and Donald Monette, all from the Socorro area, with a score of 61. Third-place golfers received $20 each.
Terry Bessette won closest to the pin on the 17th hole. Mel Patterson and Annabell Romero had the longest drive for men and women, respectively, which was judged on the sixth hole.
The tournament raised approximately $1,600 for supporting retirement, bereavement, and general recognition and appreciation costs for all SCSD employees. Restrictions on state and federal funding prevent those sources from being used for such expenses.
“We’re a close-knit family here,” Superintendent Randall Earwood said. “There are situations that arise in our employees’ lives where we want to help out or do nice things.”
The funds might be used for such things as purchasing flowers or gifts for employees, or buying refreshments for retirement events or other occasions.
This is the school district’s second year holding the tournament, and they hope to continue the annual event.
“We would like to thank our vendors and sponsors,” Anton Salome, associate superintendent, said. “We go to them for support a lot, and we really appreciate them.”
