Lady Warriors scrape out a win to head for district championship
The Lady Warriors came out pumped up for their volleyball match against the Hot Springs Tigers on Tuesday night – maybe a little too pumped up. They scraped out a 3-1 win over the Tigers, and will head to Silver City on Saturday for the district championship game.
The Ladies overplayed the first half of their first set, resulting in some silly errors that led to a very close set against a team that they beat fairly handily the prior week. They seemed to relax and communicate better to finish that first set, but continued to play somewhat erratically throughout the match.
“I think it was what was at stake,” Coach Joni Mauldin said of the girls’ effort Tuesday night. “Compared to how they played against Silver City last week, I was very stressed today.”
Although the girls lost their match against Silver City last week, Coach Mauldin said they played well together, communicating and playing as a team. Maria Alderete, No. 5, was named player of the match for that game.
“Tonight, they were back to not communicating,” Mauldin said. “No matter what I said to them, it wasn’t sinking in. I finally told them it was up to them.”
Mauldin is hoping for the same team she took to Silver City last week when they travel back for the district championship game this Saturday. They play at 2 p.m.
