Lady Steers take district title

The stands were packed as the Magdalena Lady Steers and Mountainair Mustangs faced off on Saturday for the 1A district championship match in Magdalena.

The Lady Steers go into pool play this morning in Rio Rancho with a 20-2 record, 14-0 in district.

The teams had fans on the edge of their seats as the Lady Steers battled to win the first two sets 25-22. The third set was a real nail-biter as the Mustangs led 23-20. The Lady Steers pulled ahead to 24-23, and so it went, back and forth until the ladies finally won the set 28-26.

In addition to the district championship trophy, individual honors for all-district teams were given for first and second team positions. Breann Baca was named to first team outside hitter; Danielle Gordon was named to first team setter; Abigail Bullock and Ashley Tafoya were named to first team defensive specialist; Kadie Kiehne was named first team middle blocker/hitter; Tristen Dunlap was named second team outside hitter and Jaydin Stephens was named to second team middle blocker/hitter.

The Lady Steers will face Tse Yi Gai at 8 a.m. this morning at Rio Rancho High School for state pool play. They will then play Questa following Questa’s match against Tse Yi Gai, immediately following the 8 a.m. game. First round state finals begin at 4 p.m. Thursday and continue into Friday morning.
