Volunteers add splash of paint, collect food for National Day of Volunteerism
Approximately 20 volunteers from the community, ages 13 and up, came out to work in the community on Oct. 26 for Make a Difference Day, a national day of volunteerism. This is the first year the event has been held in Socorro. The event has been held nationally on the fourth Saturday of October every year for over two decades.
Volunteers helped the Socorro County Senior Center with landscaping and grounds work needs, including painting benches and railings, as well as parking lot stripes and markings. Volunteers also painted at the Socorro Village, where a fence needed repainting. Members of the Socorro Boy Scouts Troop assisted the Socorro Storehouse by collecting nonperishable foods at booths outside of local grocery stores.
The event was a community as well as a family event, as some parents brought their teenage children out to help with projects.
