The Quemado Eagles are off to a head start with a 3-0 record in their first two weeks of play, leading their district and Class B to date.

Susann Mikkelson/El Defensor Chieftain: Forward Tristen Howard of the Quemado Eagles reaches around the Evangel Eagles’ defender in search of an open man for the pass; finding none, he went for the layup instead in the Nov. 23 game against Evangel Christian Academy in Albuquerque. Quemado won the game 58-39, their second win of the season.

The Eagles kicked off the season with a 69-41 win over the Ramah Mustangs at home on Nov. 22. They followed up this lead by traveling to Albuquerque for another win against Evangel Christian Academy on Nov. 23, holding the Evangel Eagles to 39 points to their 58, 10 of which were scored in the final five minutes. Quemado played Pine Hill at home on Tuesday night, racking up an 82-40 win over the Pine Hill Warriors.

The Eagles’ game is fairly sharp early in the season. They demonstrate strong overall team play, running plays, shooting and handling the ball. They have more than one good shooter and don’t have to rely solely on their starters on offense or defense. Their shooting averages have some room for improvement, which should come as the season progresses, and with their continued aggressive approach to shooting. They played tough defense against the Evangel Eagles, holding them to 39 points and giving them their first loss of the season, even with home court advantage.

The Eagles get a week off before traveling to Cliff for a tournament Dec. 5 through 7.
