Midwinter’s Promise concert featured at St. Paul’s
St. Paul’s United Methodist Church is bringing a special duo for a seasonal music concert on Dec. 29. Albuquerque-based husband and wife duo Scott and Irma Reeder are presenting a free Christmas Concert at St. Paul’s.
The Reeders will be sharing traditional Christmas carols from many countries, contemporary songs celebrating the season, haunting airs and hymns with roots in the Celtic heart of the British Isles, and foot-stomping Irish and American fiddle tunes. They will be playing Celtic harp, mountain dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, bowed psaltery, Irish tin whistles, renaissance recorders, guitars, bodhran (Irish frame drum) and more.
Scott and Irma met at New Mexico Tech in the late 1970s through their love of music, and have been performing together ever since. They are both accomplished vocalists, and each plays a wide variety of musical instruments. Irma is the 2009 Colorado State and 2011 Texas State mountain dulcimer champion. They actively seek New Mexico churches where they can share God’s goodness through their music.
Scott and Irma are involved in many endeavors to promote and keep acoustic folk music alive. They are on the Board of Directors of the Albuquerque Folk Festival (www.ABQFolkFest.org) held annually in June, and cofounded the New Mexico Dulcimer Festival (www.NMDulcFest.com) which takes place every October in Albuquerque. They lead the Wing & a Prayer old-time/cowboy/country Gospel band which ministers to area nursing homes and churches. Irma teaches voice, Celtic harp, mountain dulcimer and guitar privately, and harp and mountain dulcimer through University of New Mexico Continuing Education and Apple Mountain Music Store in Albuquerque.
At St. Paul’s, the Reeders play during the 10 a.m. Dec. 29 worship service. The church is located at 1000 Goad, Socorro. Call 505-554-7834 for more information. A potluck lunch will follow with more duet music plus a sing-along of seasonal favorites.
