Warriors’ play tightens
The Socorro Warriors lost by one point with a buzzer beater by the Raton Tigers on Dec. 19 in the Pojoaque Invitational, with a final score of 53 – 54. They followed up with another tight loss, this time by three, in overtime, 64 – 67. The Warriors went on to beat Mesa Vista 68 – 48 in the final tournament round on Saturday.
The Warriors continued their pattern of starting with a lead, but losing it late in the game due to turnovers and missed shots.
“Both games we lost, we were up by 12 and 14 late in the game,” Coach Lawrence Baca said. “But mental mistakes cost us those games along with being short handed.”
The Warriors were missing three key players, out due to illness and other personal reasons.
“We are playing better basketball, but just have to put the complete game together,” said Coach Baca.
Matthew Jojola was named to the all-tourney team. Ethan Smith and Zeb Esquivel also had good games, according to the coach.
The Warriors resume play on Jan. 3, playing Estancia at home at 4 p.m. The Lady Warriors will host Ruidoso on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m.
