In July a surprise South American visitor, a rufous-necked wood rail, showed up at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge near the marsh boardwalk, the first time this bird had ever been observed in the United States. The Friends of the Bosque newsletter reported the rail was only seen for 10 days, but during that short time, hundreds of birdwatchers from around the country flocked to the refuge, eager to add this U.S. first to their life lists.
