Filing day: Two run for mayor
Tuesday was filing day for candidates seeking municipal offices in Socorro and Magdalena. After serving six terms, Mayor Ravi Bhasker has decided to seek four more years. Bhasker is being challenged by sitting City Council member Michael Olguin Jr.
In addition, four positions on the Socorro City Council are up for grabs.
Running for the council in Ward 1 is incumbent Nick Fleming facing newcomer Israel Rodriguez-Rio.
Incumbent Donald Monette is seeking re-election and is unopposed in Ward 2.
Incumbent Gordy Hicks is being challenged by Luis Aguilar in Ward 3.
Incumbent Ernest Pargas is being challenged by Jacob J. Carrillo in Ward 4.
In Magdalena, Diego Montoya and current Board Trustee Tommy Torres are running for mayor.
Although there will be two vacant Trustee seats at the end of the current term, no one has filed to replace Torres or Diane Allen on the board. Magdalena Clerk Jeannie Johnston said if no one signs up as a write-in candidate for those two trustee seats the next mayor will appoint the trustees.
The village of Reserve will hold municipal elections for two board of trustee seats. The village board is comprised of four trustees and a mayor. Two trustee seats are up for election. Candidates for the two seats are Eddilu Brown, Hilda D. Keller, Debbie A. Lee and M. Keith Riddle.
Jan. 14 is the deadline for those who would like to be considered as write-in candidates for any of the offices. New Mexico's municipal election day is March 4.
