Lady Steers Fall to Tularosa
Magdalena's Lady Steers junior varsity team held the highlight of last Friday's games against the Tularosa Wildcats, with a one-point win of 28 – 27, sfter a shot at 11 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Steers varsity played a tough game against the Wildcats on Jan. 3, starting with some sloppy passes and missed shots, and closing the first half down 25 – 28. They came back strong in the second half, aggressively rebounding and hitting their shots. They still couldn't overcome the Wildcats' defense, and ended the game with a 51 – 43 loss. Coach Wally Sanchez seemed to interrupt the rhythm of the game, pulling certain players in and out frequently and at random intervals, and holding out on some of the team' usual rotation.
Wildcat fouls in the fourth quarter helped the Lady Steers close the point spread from nine to four, No. 15 Danielle Gordon sunk a 3-pointer in the last 11 seconds, but it wasn't enough to secure the win.
The Lady Steers fared better on the road, with a 38 – 24 win against the Estancia Bears Jan. 7. They next host Hatch Valley at 5 p.m. on Jan 10. The Steers play in Hatch Valley at the same time.
