Lady Warriors take down Tigers

The Lady Warriors faced the tough Hot Springs High School Lady Tigers and their fans Tuesday night in the Warrior Dome. The lead changed hands between Socorro and Hot Springs several times throughout the night, but it would be the Lady Warriors who became the hometown heroines as they beat Hot Springs 44-39.

Socorro won the tip, but the Lady Warriors took a little time warming up the basket as Socorro’s No. 32 Makayla Jacobs missed two free throws when she was fouled. However, she quickly responded with a bucket putting Socorro on the board 4 – 2 Hot Springs.

Socorro’s No. 42 Ashley Pyke chipped in another two points as the score was tied 4 – 4 with 5:08 remaining. No. 20 Shania Berger was fouled, and sank both free throws for a 6 – 4 lead. She repeated her drive again adding another bucket and a free throw with 1:40 left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Johnson and No. 50 Brianna Covarrubias each chipped in two points that tied the score 10 – 10. Berger was fouled again and added a free throw along with two hoops each from of her teammates No. 44 Aracely Alderete, No. 14 Maria Alderete, and No. 24 Madeline Chavez. Hot Springs also put up two points as the Lady Warriors were still on top 17 – 14 with 4:07 in the second quarter.

Hot Springs tied the score again 17-17 with a three-pointer, while Jacobs added another free throw as she was fouled again. Before the half ended, Hot Springs took the lead with a half-time score 24 – 23.

The third quarter began with buckets back and forth from both teams; it ended 33 – 32, Hot Springs.

Hot Springs drew blood as they opened the fourth quarter with a two-pointer. Aracely’s baseline line drive tied the score again at 35 points a piece.

Hot Springs scored three and the Lady Warrior’s were still down by one with a score of 37 – 38. Jacobs then converted for two that gave the lead back to Socorro 39 – 38. Maria Alderete made a field goal adding two more to their lead.

“The girls don’t seem to get nervous when they’re down,” Coach Greenwood said.

After a Socorro time out, Alderete increased the Socorro’s lead 43 – 38. Jacobs was fouled on a rebound, and made one of two. Socorro ran the deadly stall that sealed their 44 – 39 victory and advanced to the next round of the district tournament.

Jacobs closed the night with 17 points, and was 7 of 15 on the line. Maria Alderete had 8 points, and P

The Lady Warriors have been preparing for the game with Silver. They are seeded fifteenth and if they beat Silver, they will jump up a level going into the state tournament.
