Loss to Lovington bittersweet for senior players
The five senior players took the floor one last time in Lovington in post-season play for the first round of the state tournament. The girls played a very physical game, but the second-seeded Wildcats proved to be too much for the Lady Warriors, who lost 67 – 34.
In the first quarter, Lovington took an early lead, but No. 24 Makayla Jacobs and No. 21 Amber Willie hit a bucket each for the Lady Warriors. Another two, from No. 14 Maria Alderete and No. 42 Ashley Pyke, would close the quarter 17-8 Lovington.
Lovington opened up the second quarter aggressively; Alderete made one at the line, and Pyke rejected an attempt by a Lovington player, but it wasn’t enough. Lovington made a twenty-point run to Socorro’s four-point success from Jacobs and No. 33 Savannah Rivera. At half-time, the scorebboard read 37 – 13 Lovington.
Jacobs was at the line early in the third quarter where she sunk one. Pyke passed to No. 24 Madeline Chavez and added to the score, but Lovington continued to pull away. No. 35 Mariah Willie garnered four points – two off of a rebound in addition to another two from an inbound play. The third quarter ended with Lovington up by 33.
The fourth quarter began putting Jacobs on the line three times, but the free attempts didn’t fall. The running clock would end the game fast, but not before No. 44 Aracely Alderrete would steal Lovington’s inbounds pass, throw to Pyke, who dished it to Maria for two more points “and one.” The five seniors played together for the last minutes to close out the game 67 – 34 Lovington.
