Fishing fun, prizes at Escondida Lake this Saturday
The 15th annual Socorro youth fishing derby at Escondida Lake is this Saturday, March 22. Registration starts at 7 a.m.; fishing is from 8 a.m. till noon.
The free event is open to all youth, ages three through 17. Besides fishing, contestants get a free hot dog lunch and raffle tickets.
The girl and boy catching the longest fish will each take home a trophy as well as a prize, said event organizer, City of Socorro Recreation Director Josh Kerns.
All contestants will receive a free jar of bait and a surprise fishing gift, he said. A hundred raffle prizes will be handed out, including two bicycles and lots of fishing poles and footballs.
About 275 youth participated in the event last year, he said.
Coffee and lunch will be sold to adults to raise funds for next year's derby.
Socorro Bass Club past-president Ron Gilworth said this Saturday is shaping up to be a perfect day to go fishing.
"Game and Fish has stocked the lake with a lot of trout, so the fishing looks good," he said.
Fishing at the lake will be limited to youth until noon. Children ages 12 and over must have a valid N.M. fishing license, which can be purchased at Gamble's Tru-Value Hardware Store, Harold's Sporting Goods or Walmart.
The hot dog lunch is provided by the Socorro Disabled American Veterans, Chapter No. 24; Socorro County General Hospital; Aerojet employees; and volunteers. Other event contributors include New Mexico B.A.S.S. Federation, Antonio and Jeannete Brito, Ernest Silva and Maurice Sporting Goods, Inc.
