Lady Warriors dominate Serry Invitational
The Socorro Lady Warriors golf team won the Serry Invitational Golf Tournament by a whopping 96 shots. The tournament, hosted at the Tech golf course, took place March 16 and 17.
The Lady Warriors, who regularly at the Tech links, had home course advantage and it showed.
Senior Shania Berger led the way as she turned in scores of 78-77. Juniors Mia Salome, Chynna Pearson and Teresa Lucero shot 85-85, 95-108 and 107-100, respectively. Eighth grader Aubry Anaya shot 97-106.
Berger ran neck and neck with a Cleveland golfer; Although Berger fell short by one shot, she remains the number two golfer in the state for 3-A play.
This third leg win adds to their trophy case; the Lady Warriors have already qualified for state — again. The Lady Warriors have captured the 3-A state title for last seven years.
At this point, they will continue to work on their game to provide a better ranking going into the state tournament.
The Lady Warriors have a lot of great strengths, including “distance,” which provides them with a solid long game.
Coach Margaret Stanley said the “ladies will continue to work on their short game that will lower their score in addition to course management and their mental game”.
She said the girls have “a good work ethic” and wants them to “have fun while taking their play serious.”
Berger is the lowest shooter on the team with years of experience and is being heavily recruited by Jacksonville University and Northern Florida. Coach Stanley said Berger is the “hardest worker ever.”
The Lady Warriors will play against the state’s 4-A and 5-A schools in preparation for the state tournament, which will be hosted by NMSU. The girls will play this weekend at a tournament in Ruidoso at the Links.
