Warriors take first place, qualify for state
The Socorro High School boy’s golf team cruised to a four-shot victory over the Clovis Wildcats, as well as six other teams, at the Great 8 Invitational in Ruidoso last Friday.
The eight-team invitational included teams from 3A, 4A and 5A classifications. The Warriors were led by their underclassmen throughout the tournament.
Sophomore Ricky Silva led the way as he shot an individual qualifying round of 78 in windy and cool conditions in Ruidoso.
Silva placed second, behind Roswell High player; he has now qualified for the state high school golf tournament.
Junior Tyler Crespin also earned an individual leg for the state tournament as he shot a round of 79, placing fourth individually.
Sophomore Sean Moore placed fifth with a score of 80, sophomore Dennis Woods shot 85 and senior Will Benson finished the round at 92.
The Socorro Warriors Boys golf team has qualified for the 3A State Golf Tournament by earning its third leg as a team. Seven different players have contributed toward the team qualifying for the state tournament and the future continues to look promising for these young ‘Warriors’.
The Warriors lost two key players from last year’s team — Will Schaffer graduated and Brett transferred to NMMI — but the Socorro boys have stepped it up and improved their game by working hard on their golf swing fundamentals.
The overall team results were: Socorro 322, Clovis 326, Lovington 334, Artesia 336, Carlsbad 345, Goddard 354, Portales 362, and Ruidoso 374.
The Warriors will play their next tournament on April 10, 2014 at the Sierra del Rio golf course at Elephant Butte, New Mexico.
