Civil Air Patrol to host open house Saturday
The Socorro Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol will host an open house at Socorro Municipal Airport, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 26. The event is free and the public is invited.
CAP aircraft with specialized search-and-rescue equipment will be on hand.
These aircraft are routinely used throughout New Mexico in searches for missing people, and for other missions including disaster relief, photo reconnaissance, transport and assistance to federal, state and local agencies. CAP members from around the state will be available to answer questions about these missions.
CAP glider flights also are scheduled. CAP cadets, aged 12 to 18, receive orientation flights in gliders as part of the organization's aerospace-education program. An annual glider encampment offers cadets the opportunity for flight instruction in gliders, and some cadets solo at this activity.
In 2013, a majority of CAP's New Mexico glider flights were conducted at Socorro's airport.
Civil Air Patrol offers adults and youth a wide range of exciting opportunities for volunteer service. CAP activities are held locally, throughout the state and across the nation. A variety of skills, both in the air and on the ground, are needed to support CAP missions. In addition, CAP provides extensive training in a number of specialties, as well as in leadership, management, and youth programs.
"Whatever your interest, we probably have a volunteer job to fit you," said squadron commander Maj. Dave Finley. "Come out to the airport, join us for a burger, and learn how you can be a part of this great organization."
