Lady Warriors tough it out in winter-like conditions
The Lady Warriors golf team took second place, behind Deming, at the Leroy Gooch golf tournament April 14 and 15 in Ruidoso.
The Leroy Gooch is one of the largest golf tournaments in the state, with 14 teams and more than 80 players.
The weather conditions in Ruidoso seemed to be an extension of winter rather than spring. Due to snow, the team had an hour delay before they played the course.
But when they did, the team persevered in a cold and windy environment. Senior Shania Berger led the team the first day, shooting five over par. Juniors Mia Salome and Chynna Pearson shot 81 and 100, respectively. Eighth-grader Aubry Anaya shot 106.
The second day on the course was warmer, and the girls shaved twenty-three shots off their scorecard.
“I am very proud of the team for overcoming the weather and stepping up the second day; we should be shooting this score, or lower, every time we step on the course,” Coach Judy Stanley said.
Salome had the low round for the entire tournament, shooting two over par, with a recorded score of 73. Salome birdied two of her last four holes to shoot one under par on the back nine. Berger shot a 77. Salome and Berger tied for individual medalist; each shot a total of 154.
Anaya and Pearson also improved their game, shooting 94 and 97, respectively. Anaya brought her score down by 12 shots.
Together the team shot 341, and tied Deming’s score for the day. Coach Stanley said that the girls “still have areas that they need to work on, and (they) will get to work and focus on their individual needs this week.”
