This Saturday, May 3, Friends of Bosque del Apache presents another in a series of its ECOLAB (Every Child Outside Learning About Bosque) field days.

This half-day event at the Bosque is where kids ages five to 16 can learn about and experience aspects of recreational opportunities on a national wildlife refuge.

The day's activities begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Visitor Center for registration confirmation, logistics, and division into groups.

Each participating kid will receive a water bottle and a hat identifying the group they will be in.

All kids must have a chaperone; one chaperone may cover more than one child. Refuge-provided transportation will depart the Visitor Center for the Rio Viejo Trail parking area.

Sessions include:

• Archery – Trained instructors will provide guidance on the proper use of bows and arrows with targets.

• Waterfowl identification and calling – Participants will see ducks up close and learn tips to identify ducks on the wing and on the water.

Each kid will receive a duck call and learn the basics of common calls.

• Outdoor Photography – Instructors will teach the basics of photography with point and shoot digital cameras.

Kids will be able to borrow a camera to practice some outdoor shots, including some of a raptor and nestling raptors. Each kid will be able to keep their SD card for souvenir pictures.

•Orienteering – Kids will learn the basics of compass use. Groups of 3 will follow map directions to a prize, and keep their compass at the end.

A free lunch is from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. where participants will return to the Visitor Center picnic pavilion area for a free catered lunch and concurrent presentation by Federal Law Enforcement Officer Ben Lanford.

He'll wrap up what children experienced, safety and ethics when out on public lands. Participants that completed all stations will receive a free T-shirt.

ECOLAB is for ages five to 16 years old and is limited to 48 participants.
