Lady Warriors golfers swing way to second place
The Lady Warriors golf team played in better weather at the Roswell Invite on April 21-22.
Just a week ago, the team played in the snowy Alps of Ruidoso. The weather was not the only thing that improved; three team members shot their personal best.
The Lady Warriors came in second place overall (behind 4A Deming), and they beat the other 3A schools by 74 shots. Twelve schools participated in the tournament.
Senior Shania Berger shot 75, juniors Mia Salome and Chynna Pearson shot 82 and 88 respectively, and junior Teresa Lucero shot a 106.
Eighth-grader Aubry Anaya finished the round with 102. Berger, Salome, and Pearson all captured their individual legs. The team shot a combined 347, which put them just behind Deming. Pearson shot her personal best, and broke 90 for the first time in her golfing career.
On the second day, Berger started the round off with a birdie and played steady all day long. She shot one over par for a score of 73. Salome also shot consistently throughout the day and turned in a score of 75.
Pearson shot her personal best with a scorecard of 85, and she shot a 38 (two over par) on the back nine alone. Anaya broke 90 for the first time this season, and shot her personal best with an 88 on the scorecard. Lucero also broke 100 for the first time in her golfing career and completed her round with a 96; this was also her best game.
Berger placed third overall, while Salome secured fifth.
