The tournament weather was warm with very gusty winds throughout the day, but that didn’t stop the Lady Warriors from taking command of their game as well as the course.

The Lady Warrior golf team clinched the district championship for the 10th straight time. Socorro beat Silver City, the second place team, by a whopping 66 shots.

Senior Shania Berger started the day off with two birdies out of the first five holes. She shot 3 under par on the front nine for a score of 33.

Berger matched that performance on the back nine when she turned in another score of 33. Her total score was an impressive 6-under-par 66. Berger took medalist honors, which is the equivalent of district champion.

Junior Mia Salome made the turn and fired a 40 on the back nine to finish with a 2-over-par round of 74. Salome took district runner-up honors.

Junior Chynna Pearson struggled on the front nine, but came back strong as she blasted 4 over par on the back nine. Pearson shot an 86 and took fifth place overall.

This was the low round of the tournament for the girls and Berger, Salome and Pearson received All-District First Team honors.

Eighth-grader Aubry Anaya shot a personal best of 41 on the front nine for a total of 87; Anaya placed sixth overall.

Junior Teresa Lucero shot her personal best on the round and turned in a scorecard of 90; Lucero placed eighth overall.

Both Anaya and Lucero took All-District Second Team honors.

The girls weren’t the only ones that received recognition. Coach Margaret Stanley was also honored as Coach of the Year for the 10th consecutive time.

“I am really proud of all the girls. They have worked hard on their game for the last two weeks. We have one week left until state, and I plan on working them just as hard this week,” Stanley said.

The Lady Warriors still need to improve their short game, according to Stanley. If Socorro golfers save more shots around the green, it will help them continue to build their scoring confidence.

“I am confident that we will be ready for battle at the state tournament,” she added.

The state tournament is Monday and Tuesday, May 12 and 13.
