Warrior boys’ golf captures district title
The Socorro High School boy’s golf team won the A/AAA District Championship by a whopping 25 shots at the Links at Sierra Blanca in Ruidoso.
The Warriors beat five other district teams including the Silver City Fighting Colts, the Hot Springs Tigers, the Ruidoso Warriors, the Cobre Indians and the Capitan Tigers.
The Warriors were led by individual medalist Sean Moore, who shot 75 in the breezy conditions at the Ruidoso golf course. Moore, a sophomore, has been the individual medalist in three of his last four tournaments and continues his torrid pace as the Warriors prepare for the state championship.
Moore edged out fellow teammate, 2013 defending district champion Ricky Silva by one shot. Silva’s score of 76 was followed by teammates Will Benson and Isaiah Anaya who both shot 78s.
Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors was Dennis Woods who shot 80. Warrior players took five out of the top six places in the district scoring and all were named to the All-District team as well as Coach Russ Moore winning the District A/AAA Coach of the Year.
“Our Warriors continue to improve each week as we prepare for the state tournament in Las Cruces,” Coach Russ Moore said. “We are a very young team, but, they are mature young men and they are competitive with each other. We have 10 players on the team who compete each week to represent the Socorro High School varsity golf team, and they show their ‘Warrior pride’ in the tournaments.”
