BARNES – Nellie Barela Barnes, 92, passed away in the early hours on Monday, May 12, 2014, peacefully in her home in Socorro, N.M. surrounded by family and friends. A longtime resident of Socorro, Nellie was born on March 22, 1922, to Gabriel and Isabel (Padilla) Barela. Gabriel and Isabel had seven other children, of which Nellie was the youngest and last surviving daughter. Nellie was a true people person, who loved meeting new people and maintaining strong bonds with her family and friends. Nellie was a long time member of the Harwood Methodist Church, becoming involved in many church related activities, including enchilada dinners and Christmas plays. She loved her long time job at the Bosque del Apache, because not only did she enjoy meeting new people, but was also an avid lover of animals. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Jennie Padilla, Josephine Montoya, Sadie Montoya, Flora Gaddis, Adelena Montoya and Eugenia Mora; brother, Gilbert Barela; and her first husband, Thomas Newboldt. Nellie is survived by her husband of 41 years, Otis Barnes; daughter, Louise Errett and husband, Ellis; son, Thomas Newboldt and wife, Pam; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Her family was her strongest bond and she is greatly missed. Services will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1000 Goad, Socorro with Pastor Jim Montoya officiating. Interment to follow at the Socorro Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Kimble, Jason Kimble, Ellis Errett, Jose Lozano, Clarence Montoya and Brian Errett. DUNN – Eva Laura Dunn, 100, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014 in Lemitar. She was born in Sherman, Texas on Aug. 20, 1913, to George and Effie (Hicks) Smallwood. Eva married her high school sweetheart R. Weldon Dunn in 1930. Eva and Weldon had one son, Jack Dunn, and moved to Tucson, Ariz. in 1949. Eva and Weldon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1980. After Weldon passed, Eva moved to Quemado, N.M. where she was an active member of the Quemado Baptist Church and the Quemado Senior Citizen’s Center. Eva is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her granddaughter, Rashall. Eva is survived by her loving son, Jack Dunn and wife, Sue; her adoring granddaughter, Jennifer Armstrong and husband, Alton; her great grandchildren, Lori Wilson, Chelsea Armstrong, Jessie Otero, and Allie Armstrong; and her great great grandchildren, Morgan and Sawyer Wilson and Brooke and Rocky Pettis. Eva was a special person and strong in her faith and she will be missed by all that knew and loved her. FRANKS — Sybil I. Franks, 81, passed away peacefully on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, 2014. She was born in Mountainair, N.M. On Dec. 17, 1932 to John Henry and Myrtle Garrison. She grew up in Mountainair, but lived most of her life in Socorro. Sybil was a resident of Good Samaritan Society for the last 30 years and was the longest resident there. She was a devoted home maker, wife and mother. She had many illnesses but her heart was always full of love. She enjoyed walking and sitting and watching the sunset with her son and friends at Good Sam’s. She was an avid guitarist. She loved music. Sybil enjoyed an occasional bingo game. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Randall Franks; her son, Danny Brawley; her granddaughters, Veronica Montoya and Betti Ann McGovern. Sybil was also preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her devoted son, Randy Franks; daughter in law, Diana Brawley; her niece, who was more like her sister, Wanda Ramzel; her loving sister in law, Jean Moss; and many other loving family members, nieces, nephews, and close friends. Sybil will be greatly missed by all her loving grandchildren; her great grandchildren and the entire Good Sam Society Family, patients, staff, and care takers.
