Lady Warriors relay team nabs second at state
The Socorro High School Lady Warriors’ 800-meter relay team of senior Tamera Chavez, junior Daneisha Thornton and freshmen Kalynn Darras and Maya Cordova raced to a second-place finish with a time of 1:48.50 at the 3A state track meet last weekend at the University of New Mexico.
Chavez followed up that performance, sprinting to earn third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.78 seconds.
Eighth-grader Audry Baca had an impressive showing at state, placing sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.17. Freshman Maya Cordova ran the 400 dash in 1:01.68 to play seventh. The 1,600 relay team of Baca, Darras, Thornton and eighth-grader Zoe Esquivel earned eighth place.
On the boys’ side, the 1,600 relay team of senior James Howell and juniors Jessie Fielder, Joe Armijo and Colton Wheeler finished eighth. Armijo also earned an eighth-place finish in the 400 dash. Meanwhile, sophomore teammate Manuel Locano paced his way to eighth place in the 1,600 run. Locano and junior Matthew Lucero placed ninth and 12th, respectively, in the 3,200 run.
In other events, Thornton finished ninth in the javelin and 10th in the shot put; freshman Damien Cardenas earned 10th in the 800, senior Jeric Chavez leapt to a 10th place finish in long jump, junior Juan Gomez placed 10th in javelin, Tamera Chavez finished 13th in the long jump, freshman Emerald Goranson earned 14th place in the 800 and 3,200; and freshman Autumn Goranson finished 15th in the 1,600.
