Special Olympics torch run to pass through town
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will pass through Socorro Wednesday, May 28 between 11 a.m. and noon, according to Bureau of Land Management Ranger Marc Wheeler.
All law enforcement agencies – federal, state and local – are taking part in the torch run. It’s been held each year since the 80s to promote the Special Olympics, Wheeler said. He took on having it pass through Socorro three years ago. The Special Olympics takes place May 30-31 at the University of New Mexico.
Wheeler invites the public to join law enforcement agencies next Wednesday to cheer on the torch runners. The run will enter town from the north on California Street and head south to Manzanares and then over to the Plaza. At one point the torch will be handed off to one of the Special Olympians, Wheeler said.
The celebration will include sirens, cheering and “all kinds of noise,” he added.
