Warriors finish second at state
The Socorro High School Warriors golf team placed second at the state tournament held recently at the New Mexico State Golf Course in Las Cruces.
The warriors were seeded second going into the state tournament behind the Hope Christian Huskies who were crowned the state champions for the third year in a row.
The Warriors were led by sophomore Isaiah Anaya who had rounds of 78-77 for a two-day tournament total of 155 and an individual second place finish.
Anaya was the steadiest warrior golfer of the state tournament with his consistent play, outstanding short game, and was one of two warriors on the all state tournament team. Sean Moore placed sixth individually with rounds of 79-80 and was the second Warrior on the All-State tournament team.
Other warrior individual scores were Ricky Silva 79-84, Will Benson 87-87, and Dennis Woods 90-92.
“I am very proud of our 2014 warrior golf team. We had 10 individuals who competed each week for a spot on the traveling team and they conducted themselves like champions on and off the golf course,” Coach Russ Moore said. “This team won five tournaments this year and they were good winners when they won and they showed even more class when they lost a tournament.
“They were true gentlemen on the links. I am especially proud of Isaiah Anaya’s steady improvement over the last two years. His improvement is directly related to his hard work during the golfing season and over the last two winters.”
The Warriors lose two seniors to graduation – Will Benson and Alq Fuierer – but next year’s team will be strong with three juniors returning, five sophomores, two freshmen and an eighth-grader.
