FERNANDEZ – Virginia L. Fernandez, 97, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2014. She was born May 30, 1917 in Hilo, Hawaii. She is preceded in death by husband John Decosta Sr., and husband, Joseph Fernandez, and son-in-law Lurito Acierto. She is survived by her children Annie Acierto, John Decosta Jr. and wife Barbara, Leo Decosta and wife Audrey, and Harold Decosta and wife, Maureen, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. A celebration will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2014 at El Buen Pastor Church in Socorro, New Mexico. Final resting place will be in Homelani Memeorial in Hilo, Hawaii.

LATASA – Louis Latasa, 69, a resident of Magdalena, passed away in his home, on Tuesday, July 15. He was born June 1, 1945 to Mariano and Angelica Latasa in Magdalena, New Mexico. Louie is survived by his three children, Leroy Latasa and wife Karma of St. Johns, FL, Reneé and husband Bryan Baca of Magdalena, and Zoe Latasa and partner Joe Don Autrey of Magdalena. He is the proud grandfather of Daniel, Alyna, Breann, Joshua, Shaylyn, Karah and Kaydence; recently he became a great grandfather to Jaxen. He is also survived by his sister, Lucille Gutierrez; brothers, Mariano, Bennie, Rudy and Jimmy Latasa; along with many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beautiful, loving wife Dina; his parents, Mariano and Angelica; and siblings, Augustine, Johnny, Rosemary and Theresa. Louie served the village of Magdalena and its surrounding communities for the greater part of 20 years, and retired from New Mexico Tech as chief of police in August of 2007. Louie was a wonderful man who loved his family and God. He was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church and headed the choir for many years.
