The Magdalena High School volleyball team moves up to New Mexico Activities Association’s Class AA this season, but the Lady Steers will face many of the same teams, according to Head Coach Bryan Baca.

One other thing remains the same for Baca’s team – the goal of advancing to the state playoffs.

“We’re solid. We have some big hitters,” he said. “We have a big crop of kids coming up.”

The Lady Steers just missed advancing to the Class A state championship match last season, as they racked up a 20-3 overall record. That squad saw seven seniors graduate last spring.

Baca, in his third year coaching the Lady Steers, looks to seniors Breann Baca and Abigail Bullock and junior Jaydin Stephens to step up and provide leadership for his team this season.

“They have some pretty big shoes to fill,” he added.

The team is coming off a successful summer program, according to Baca. The Lady Steers will also pick up valuable experience playing larger schools at the Belen and Fort Sumner tournaments this season, he added.

“Our girls are ready,” Baca said.

Magdalena opens the season at Socorro High School 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26.
