ALAMO – Katie Sky Monte, born Jan. 3 at 12:43 p.m., was welcomed into the world as the first baby born in 2011 at Socorro General Hospital — but she had some competition.

Three women went into labor midday on Jan. 3, but Katie beat the others for the distinction of being the first baby of the New Year.

Mother Brittney Ganadonegro said she had no idea her baby was the first of the New Year until a few hours after Katie was born, when the baby’s father, her boyfriend, Harris Monte, told her. At 7 pounds, 11.9 ounces and 20.25 inches, baby Katie, and her mother, are healthy and are expected to return home to Alamo within the next day.

Waiting for them at home is Katie’s older sister, Britten Monte, who is 9, and her brothers Quan Monte, 5, and Quarol Monte, 3, who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their baby sister.

Ganadonegro is familiar with New Year’s babies as her youngest son, Quarol, was born only one hour before New Year on Dec. 31, 2008.

Along with her siblings, Katie has a big family to welcome her home including her grandparents, Ganadonegro’s mother, Loucienda Ganadonegro, and father, Kenneth Ganadonegro.

Katie is only the second granddaughter for the Ganadonegros, who have five grandsons. Ganadonegro said her mother is excited to have another granddaughter. Katie’s grandparents on her father’s side are Juan Monte and Marta Monte. Katie also has seven aunts on her father’s side to receive her. Ganadonegro’s brother, Micheal, helps take care of her sons.

“He adores the boys,” Ganadonegro said.

As she grows, Katie will have a close companion as Ganadonegro’s sister, Cherokee, gave birth to a baby boy, Tyreese Apachito, only eight months ago.

As the first baby of the New Year, Katie received a $100 gift certificate to Walmart, but more importantly she will hold a special title as the Socorro County baby New Year 2011.
