Wayne Ohline was born on March 9, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri. He suffered a stroke and passed away shortly after in Albuquerque on September 17, 2019.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa in 1956 and his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Northwestern University in 1960. He worked for a year at Mallinckrodt Chemical Company in St. Louis before joining the Chemistry Department at New Mexico Tech as an Assistant Professor in 1961. He was promoted to full professor some years later, served a term as chairman of the department and taught analytical chemistry until 1995, when he retired.
Wayne was an avid musician and played both the violin and the piano. He played in the New Mexico Tech orchestra during the 1980s. He was a long-standing member of Rotary and served a term as President.
Wayne was a muchloved father and grandfather. He is survived by his son, Matthew, daughter-inlaw Jill, and grandchildren Aidan and Erin Ohline of Redwood City, California; his daughter Shane Ohline, and grandsons Peter, Oliver, Theo and Linus Molteno of Dunedin, New Zealand; his brother, Howard, and sister-in-law Katherine, of Media, Pennsylvania.
His family and friends remember him as a gentle, positive, and friendly presence. He entertained us over the years with his “Dad-isms”. Examples include his statements to the effect that he had “surveyed over a million people and his family was the best”, that when the family visited we were guaranteed to have “The Fun”, and his efforts to make sure we all learned to how say “perspicacity.”
A memorial service will be held in Wayne’s memory on December 2, 2019 at 2 p.m. The service will be held by the Unitarian Universalists in the Parish Hall at the Episcopal Church in Socorro.
