The Socorro Consolidated Schools board took a few moments at their Aug. 31 meeting to acknowledge and appreciate 10 teachers and staff members who retired from the district this year.

A team of New Mexico Tech scientists, professors and students has embarked on an ambitious project to improve the electrical grid's capability of integrating renewable power.

Dr. Kevin Wedeward, chairman of the electrical engineering department, is leading Tech's partnership with the University of Hawaii. The two universities officially started the project May 1, with a $500,000 grant from the federal Department of Energy.

In eight weeks, voters will make their choice on who they want to govern the state of New Mexico in what will be a historic election, with one of two candidates vying for the state's highest position becoming the first woman governor in the history of the state.

Steve Pearce remembers being a 10-year-old and bringing his pigs and sheep to show at the county fair, so spending the day in Socorro at the county fair was a natural for him.
