Socorro County's new chief deputy assessor was sworn in Thursday, March 11, before Magistrate Jim Naranjo.

Tommy Gonzales was appointed by County Assessor Val Anaya to fill the position left vacant after Pete Gonzales retired at the end of February.

"He knows what's ahead of him and I'm very confident he will do well," Anaya said.

Gonzales, a former San Antonio, N.M., Post Master, retired after 34 years of service — but his retirement didn't last long. He went to work for the county two years ago, on the E-911 rural addressing and mapping system, which seemed a perfect fit for the former postman.

Now, his new position will take him in yet another direction.

"I'm looking forward to this opportunity," Gonzales said smiling. "I'm a fast learner and will serve our community to the best of my ability."

Gonzales said they have a great staff that handles those who come into the Assessor's Office. But at times, Anaya may not be there and they will need someone to carry the ball — and he is looking forward to the task.

"I will work hard," Gonzales said.

Anaya said he plans to focus on the talents Gonzales brings with him to his new position, especially his knowledge and understanding school districts, office set up and tax rates.

Gonzales, who is no stranger to public service, also serves as board president of the Socorro Consolidated School District and has been on the board for the past 16 years.

"This is nothing new as far as being able to serve the public," Gonzales said. "I'm excited and that's half the battle — you have to be excited with what you're doing."

Born and raised in Socorro, Gonzales and his wife, Frances, have raised three sons: Kenny, Robby and Jason.
