Grandjean - James ("Jim") Dennis Grandjean entered this life on April 17, 1940 in Slaton, Texas to parents Jules and Tillie (Bourguet) Grandjean. He was called to be with the Lord on June 30th, 2008 while cradled in the arms of his wife and sons. He is survived by his wife of 30 years and his three sons, Jules, Alain, and James. His brother Darrell (Angie) Grandjean, and sisters Sandie (Ron) Lane and Claudia Rios currently reside in California. He is also survived by his uncle Darwin Bourguet of Truth or Consequences, his cousins Valerie (Orville) Moore and Betty Pound of Socorro, and numerous other family members throughout the state of New Mexico. Jim attended high schools in both Silver City and Monticello, New Mexico. In his early years he worked as a chemical control technician in California and traveled across the globe on active duty with the U.S. Naval reserve. He later graduated with honors from San Francisco State University, and was later awarded the degree of Juris Doctor by Hastings College of the Law in a ceremony attended by Chief Justice Earl Warren of the United States Supreme Court. Jim practiced in Alaska for 13 years, serving primarily as the state's director of legal services, before coming "home" to New Mexico in 1983. He served in numerous positions throughout the state: serving Magdalena as its village attorney, and taking custody and delinquency cases as the Assistant Children's Court Attorney for Socorro and Catron counties. Jim also worked as the City Attorney for Socorro, while he operated private offices in both Socorro and Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. He treasured nothing quite as much as taking public defense contracts for the city and county of Socorro and helping those who would not have representation otherwise. Jim ultimately resided in Prescott, Arizona, after running his law practice concurrently in both Arizona and New Mexico. He spent the last 20 years of his life in Arizona tirelessly helping those who could not afford a civil or criminal defense. He considered himself a "humble country lawyer" who felt lucky for his blessings and compelled to give back. Family was exceedingly important to him. He worked around a busy schedule to coach sports teams for his sons, participated in scouting activities with them, and enjoyed time teaching all three of his sons to drive well before their teenage years. In the few hours he had free, he often enjoyed visiting his family throughout New Mexico state, and traveling to Monticello where his heart would never leave. Though he thought of himself as a "regular guy", we all thought of him as so much more. He leaves us with indelible memories, and a continuous wonder at his ability to see the good in other people. His heart was full of love for his sons, and for his wife, whom he often referred to as his guardian angel. He will be greatly missed by us all. Services were held at Sacred Heart Church in Prescott, AZ. A tribute to Jim's life can be found at www.ruffnerwakelin.com, where comments from friends and family are welcome.
