Trinity Site Open House, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. White Sands Missile Range. This is the second of two times during the year that the site is open to the public (the first is in April). This is where the first atomic bomb was exploded July 16, 1945. For more info, contact Jim, 575-479-6124.

Very Large Array Guided Tours, Noon Learn about the radiotelescope array on the Plains of San Agustin, 50 miles west of Socorro on U.S. 60. 575-835-7000. Free.

Trinity Site & VLA Van Shuttle, 8 a.m. Historic Plaza. Van rides are $10 per person per tour; children are half price. Socorro Chamber of Commerce, 575-835-0424.

Octoberfest, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Hammel Museum. Annual celebration to commemorate the autumn harvest and the founding of the Hammel Museum, which is housed in a historic former brewery and ice house located at 600 N. Chile Proppers Fly-In New Mexico Tech Model Airplane Field. The local Chili Proppers Model Airplane Club model airplane competition. The field fee is $5 per day per pilot, plus $1 per plane per event entered.
