The Socorro County Farm and Livestock Bureau is looking for donations of goods to fill packages for the military. Dan Kloss, bureau president and Terry Towner, chairman of the women's committee are spearheading the effort.

"We understand that our troops in Iraq are doing OK, but the troops in Afghanistan could use a morale boost," said Kloss.

Kloss said there are 12 New Mexicans in Afghanistan at the moment, but that is always subject to change. The packages the bureau will put together go to units, not to individuals.

Towner said they are hoping to get schools, business and churches involved, as well as individuals.

New Mexico National Guard 1st Sgt. Jason Riley with the Army Range Sustainment Integration Council provided the bureau with a list of suggested items the soldiers need or want. The following is the list he sent, with comments included.

  • Dryer sheets

  • Pop Tarts (we love all kinds, surprise us)

  • Ground Starbuck's coffee (as strong as they make it)

  • Powdered creamers (as foo-foo as they make it)

  • Beef jerky (preferably New Mexico centric with lots of green and red chile)

  • Green chile

  • Honey, peanut butter creamy not crunchy

  • Crackers - Wheat Thins, Triscuits or wheat crackers

  • Cashews

  • Emergen-c or Airborne (to combat the medieval particles in the air)

  • Hard candy and individually wrapped gum (for the local children)

  • Notepads and stick crayons (also for the local children)

  • Large Ziploc bags (to keep the alternating rain and dust out of everything)

  • Multi-vitamins (especially those for men)

  • Febreeze for fabrics

  • Cappuccino mix "stix"

  • Coffee bags (coffee for field use)

  • Space-saver bags (small, medium or large)

  • Wet wipes

  • Books

Towner said the bureau will need the items no later than June 1. The packages will be shipped through Fort Bliss on a military hop. The bureau hopes to get the packages to Afghanistan by the 4th of July.

Kloss said they are requesting non-perishable goods in non-breakable containers. He said notes and letters from everyone to all the soldiers would be appreciated and will be added to the packages.

"We want to give our troops in Afghanistan a morale boost," he said.

People who want to make up their own packages may do so if the packages are small enough and easy to handle. Otherwise, he said, they will be doing the packing.

All donations should be dropped off at the Farm Bureau Insurance Office, at 828 California St. For more information, call Kloss at 575-835-2423, or Towner at 575-835-3351.
