Former Socorroan promoted to top position

Submitted to El Defensor Chieftain By Farm Credit of New Mexico

Alfred "Al" Porter Jr., originally from Socorro, has been promoted to president and chief executive officer of Farm Credit of New Mexico.

Porter succeeds Bruce McAbee, who has been at the helm of Farm Credit for the past five years.

Porter has been with the association for almost 28 years, starting in June 1980, at Production Credit Association of Southern New Mexico. Porter had a successful career with the PCA and was the executive vice president when the commercial lending organization merged with Farm Credit and provided long-term loans.

In September 1999, Porter became the branch manager of the Las Cruces office for Farm Credit. He served in that capacity until 2004. The Las Cruces office increased its loan volume from $172 million to $280 million within the five-year period under Porter's direction.

For the past 4 years, Porter has served as executive vice president and chief credit officer of Farm Credit and has been responsible for all credit activities of the association's five branch offices.

Porter is a graduate of New Mexico State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economic,; and of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

Porter is married to Cherri; together they have three children: Chelsea, Michel and Kyle.

Farm Credit of New Mexico is New Mexico's full-service agricultural lender, providing agricultural real estate loans, operating loans, equipment and livestock loans, crop hail insurance and multi-peril insurance to New Mexico farmers and ranchers.

The association has offices located in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Roswell, Clovis and Tucumcari.
