Filing for co-op's election continues

Seven of the 11 seats on the Socorro Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees are up for grabs during elections to be held during the month of October. The candidates are running for four-year terms.

Only co-op members are eligible to vote.

The first of the elections will take place in District IV on Friday, Oct. 3, at the San Antonio Elementary School cafeteria. Registration begins at 5 p.m., and the business session is scheduled for 7 p.m.

District IV is currently represented by David P. Wade. He will be opposed by Pauline Taylor.

In District I, incumbent Leo C. Cordova will be opposed by Alfred E. Esquibel. That election will take place on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Northern Socorro County Senior Citizen Center in Las Nutrias. Registration takes place from 3-7 p.m. with the business session to follow.

Candidates can still file an affidavit declaring candidacy in Districts II, III and V.

In District II, the deadline to file is Thursday, Sept 11, at 4 p.m. That district is currently represented by Paul Bustamante, who serves as president of the board. The election date for District II is Saturday, Oct. 11.

The deadline to declare candidacy in District III is Thursday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m. There are three seats at stake in the District III election, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 18. They are currently held by Leroy Anaya, Manny Marquez and Milton Ulibarri. New candidates must declare which of the three seats they are contesting.

The candidate declaration deadline in District V is Thursday, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m. Jack Bruton is the incumbent for the election to be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Datil Elementary School cafeteria.

Declarations of candidacies must be turned into the SEC offices at 215 E. Manzanares and are subject to challenge. Qualifications for candidacy are listed in the co-op bylaws under Article V, Section 3. The bylaws are posted on the co-op Web site: www.socorroelectric.com
