Wednesday, January 14, 2009 Village's complex experiences short delayTSLAST Construction work has temporarily stopped on Magdalena's new municipal complex, but the delay is expected to be short. At Monday's (Jan. 12) meeting of the Magdalena Board of Trustees, Mayor Jim Wolfe said work has been delayed due to a shipment of beams that had not yet arrived. He said the delay was only temporary the holdup was caused by inclement weather and the beams were expected to arrive any day. The matter came up during the mayor's report when Wolfe asked the board to approve a change order. The change was for an exterior door to be added to allow outside access to a storage unit. He said he expected the change to add $400 to $500 to the project. The board unanimously approved the change order, with trustee Jack Fairweather absent. Phase II of the municipal complex is budgeted for $524,000 for the current fiscal year. It will cover the cost of building a new home for the county's administrative offices. After the meeting, Wolfe said he expected that phase of the project to be completed by mid to late summer. Another $400,000 is earmarked for the completion of Phase II in 2010. The board did not act on a change order for the fire station addition, because a cost estimate was not available. That request is for an additional pad that could accommodate another vehicle. Wolfe said the village also wanted to add lockers and shelving to the firehouse. Also, the walkway in front of the building would be made handicap accessible. "We have a fair amount of money left, so we're in good shape," Wolfe said. The board did approve a $4,180 addition to the contract to repair the roof at the fire station. In other business:
Steven Bailey, the village's public works director, said the new stop signs would replace old ones that were badly faded by weather. He said the new high-intensity prismatic signs would hold up better against the elements. The bid also includes two street signs for Tenth Street and one for M Mountain Road. The board also approved a request made by Bailey for the purchase of four new tires for the department's pickup truck. The board approved the low bid of $422 from T&T Tire, which would also include mounting and balancing.
Board members Barbara Baca and Dolly Dawson both expressed concerns about the 911 system. Baca said she recently made a 911 call on behalf of another person and it took an hour for help to arrive. Cearley said there have been problems with the 911 system and he promised to look into the matter to see where the breakdown was. Dawson said she recently called in a medical emergency and was unable to get through. Ultimately an ambulance in Socorro had to be called. In response to that incident, Cearley said it was a rare case when all four Emergency Medical Technicians serving Magdalena happened to be out of town.
"Again, the community of Magdalena came through," she said.
