The Socorro Electric Cooperative Board of Trustees tapped Jim Nelson of Magdalena to fill the District II trusteeship, recently vacated by the resignation of Judith Holcomb. The action was taken at the board’s December 26 regularly scheduled monthly meeting.
Holcomb had been representing District II - encompassing a large part of northwestern Socorro County, including Magdalena and Alamo - since 2015, when she was chosen by the board to serve out the remainder of Charlie Wagner’s term. Wagner resigned in August, 2015. Holcomb was elected to the current term in 2016. The reason for her September 26 resignation had not been made public.
Nelson moved to Magdalena in 2011 from Manhattan, Kansas, where he taught plant genetics at Kansas State University. He said he was initially drawn to Magdalena “because of the mountains,” and the people.
Nelson is currently a member of the Magdalena Village Board of Trustees, and has been involved with Magdalena’s Fire Department and EMS, as well as Magdalena Schools’ Gardening Club.
He will occupy SEC’s District II seat until April, 2020, when that district’s election will be held.
The 2019 Election in April will be for Trustees from District I, District IV and District V. Those seats are currently held by Mary Baca, Dave Wade and Anne Dorough, respectively.
