Dear Readers:

Beginning Thursday, July 4, El Defensor Chieftain will be increasing the price of its weekly newspaper from 50 cents to $1.

Let me assure you, we have agonized for several months about increasing the price of your hometown newspaper. With that being said, El Defensor Chieftain has not increased our newsstand price since 1999 – 20 years ago.

If you are a current subscriber to the newspaper, you will not see an increase in your subscription price. As a matter of fact, in today’s edition of El Defensor Chieftain, we are offering a wonderful offer to lock down the subscription price for another year.

Until July 1, current and new subscribers can lock up the savings for 2019 for a special price. Readers can purchase a newspaper to be delivered to their door for only $40 a year. That’s $12 off the newsstand price of $52.

That being said, beginning on July 4 we also will begin locking down our website, What does that mean? Unless you have a subscription to El Defensor Chieftain, you won’t be able to view our site. The price of your subscription will include FREE access to our site.

For those who don’t need or want a hard copy of newspaper, a digital subscription to our web site will be needed to gain access. A one-year digital subscription is $30. A monthly digital subscription is $5 or you can pay 99 cents per story viewed, after July 4. If you just want to look at our website, you will be allowed five free views each month.

Please look for information about this offer in today’s newspaper or call El Defensor Chieftain’s office 575-835-0520 and ask about our “Lock Up the $aving$” subscription offer.

As editor and publisher of your hometown newspaper, please know that I care about our readers and welcome the opportunity to listen to your concerns and comments about our publication.

Whether it’s a story idea, a circulation complaint or you just want talk about something happening in the community, my door is always open.
