According to the Map the Meal Gap survey on the Feeding America website, 16 percent of Socorro County residents struggle with food insecurity. As we approach the biggest food holiday of the year – Thanksgiving – Socorro Storehouse is stepping up efforts to provide additional help in the form of special Thanksgiving food boxes which will include turkeys, hams, and other traditional holiday foods. These special boxes will be distributed on Tuesday, November 26 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Storehouse location – 519 S. Hwy 85 across the street from Dollar Tree.
Storehouse is raising funds for these special food boxes by raffling off a beautiful quilt which has been donated by the Socorro County Fiber Arts Guild. Raffle tickets can be purchased from Storehouse board members and also at the Festival of the Cranes Crafts Fair at the Garcia Opera House on November 22 and 23. The drawing for the quilt and other prizes will take place at the Crafts Fair. You need not be present to win. All proceeds go to the Thanksgiving food boxes.
Donations to the Storehouse website – socorrostorehouse.org – and food donations are also solicited for this project. Clubs and civic groups may participate by conducting food drives in November. Call the Storehouse at 575-835-2079 for more info on how your organization can do a food drive.
Volunteers are needed year-round and especially at the holidays to pack boxes. Contact director Melissa Ramsey at 575-835-2079 for info on volunteer opportunities.
