Editor: On Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021, Stella Yvette Herrell was sworn in as a U.S. Representative for our state. On that date she swore “I, Stella Herrell, do solemnly swear or affirm that I will support the Constitution of the United States.”

Yet three days later, on Jan. 6, 2021, she violated that Oath and voted to overturn the legitimate votes of Americans in an election. This was obviously not a spur of the minute decision. She took an Oath to support the Constitution knowing that she fully intended to violate that Oath only a few short days later.

I can only think of two explanations for this behavior: First, she believed the false assertions promulgated by President Donald Trump and his delusional supporters or second, she believed that by supporting these false allegations that she would further her political career.

I hold that if the former is true, Herrell lacks the judgment and ability for critical thinking to carry out her duties on behalf of New Mexico. If the latter is true, Herrell is guilty of supporting sedition and should never hold any office, local, state or federal, again.

Currently, New Mexico has provisions for recalling local and state elected officials but there is no provision to recall an official elected to a federal office.

I have called upon my State Representative and Senator to introduce legislation that would allow New Mexicans to recall anyone elected to a federal office. However, in the absence of that being a current option, the only recourse we have is for Herrell to do the honorable thing and resign.

Sadly, given that she violated an Oath of Office three days after taking that oath, I am doubtful that honor is anything Herrell understands.

New Mexicans, please contact your state officials [www. nmlegis.gov/Members/] and demand that legislation is introduced and passed that would permit an official in a federal office to be recalled.

In addition, contact your US Representative in Congress [www. house.gov/representatives/findyour-representative] and demand that they support a motion to expel Herrell from Congress.

Sadly for me, Herrell is my Representative and I have no expectations that she will do the right thing. She has clearly shown that she is not representing all of her constituents but only those who share her nondemocratic beliefs.
