Claunch bronc buster bucks his way to the top

Four area youth participated in the Moriarty High School Rodeo on Saturday and Sunday (April 14-15). The rodeo was held at the Heritage Arena in Moriarty and was hosted by the New Mexico High School Rodeo Association.

In the Rough Stock category, Claunch native Quirt McDaniel took first place in the bareback bronc riding competition with an impressive 72 score. McDaniel is ranked number two so far this year in bare-back bronc riding.

Rodee Walraven, of Datil, and partner Beau Marshall, of Sierra County, placed third in the first round of the team calf roping event, and second place in the second round with a time of 6.35 seconds in the team calf roping event. The pair also had the best average for the event and are ranked as the number two team so far this year.

In his solo run, Walraven placed eighth during the second round of calf roping with a time of 13.29 seconds. Walraven is currently ranked 19 for calf roping.

Johnny Salvo, of Horse Springs, placed fourth with his partner Chase Massengill, of Pojoaque, in both rounds of the team calf roping event. Their best time was 7.95 seconds and their team is currently the number one ranked team this year.

Salvo also placed seventh in the first round of the individual calf roping with a score of 13.92 seconds. Salvo is currently ranked as the number three calf roper as of the Moriarty event.

Ryan Sanders, who hails from Magdalena, earned a seventh place finish in the second round of individual calf roping with a time of 13.09 seconds. Sanders is currently at the number 22 standing this year for calf roping.

The title of "All Around Cowboy" was bestowed upon Rankin Lindsey, of Hillsboro. Jordan Muncy, of Torrance County, received the honor of "All Around Cowgirl."

The High School Rodeo state finals will be in Carlsbad on June 7-9 at the Eddy County Sheriff's Posse Grounds .
