Area high school riders return to rodeo circuit

Several area cowboys traveled to Truth or Consequences the weekend of Sept. 15-16 to get back in the swing of things as New Mexico High School Rodeo held its second rodeo of the season.

Claunch rider Quirt McDaniel finished in first place on both days in the bareback bronc riding event, with scores of 72 and 75.

McDaniel scored 73 and 65 the prior weekend to be the average winner in the Capitan Rodeo on Sept. 8-9.

Magdalena roper Ryan Sanders finished eighth in calf roping on Sept 15 with a time of 12.609 seconds.

In the Capitan rodeo Sanders placed sixth on Sept. 9 in calf roping with a time of 11.758 seconds and 10th in team roping with partner Cutter Whipple, of Capitan, with a time of 12.367 seconds.

Datil native Rodee Walraven with partner Logan Medlin, of Tatum, finished second in team roping with a blazing fast time of 6.731 secondd on Sept. 16.

Walraven and Medlin finished fourth on Sept. 8 and third place on Sept. 9, in Capitan, with times of 12.87 and 7.272 seconds.

Seth Hall won the title of All-Around Cowboy in Truth or Consequences, and Chalon Lefebre was honored as All-Around Cowgirl. More information and results from recent NMHSR events can be found at www.nmhighschoolrodeo.com

McDaniel is a senior who lives in the Northeast corner of Socorro county and attends school in Corona.

Walraven is a senior at Quemado High School this year and was one of the riders representing New Mexico at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Springfield, Ill., in July.
