Several area riders competed in the New Mexico High School Rodeo Association rodeo held in Belen on Oct. 19-21.

Claunch rider Quirt McDaniel finished first in the second go of the bareback bronc riding event with a score of 71. Currently McDaniel is the number one ranked bareback bronc rider in the NMHSRA.

Rodee Walraven, of Datil, with partner Logan Medlin, of Tatum, finished second in team roping in the first go with a time of 6.97 seconds. Walraven and Medlin hold a slight overall lead in team roping over the team of JC Archuleta and Ryan Cook.

Magdalena roper Ryan Sanders and partner Cutter Whipple, of Capitan finished fifth in the second go with a time of 8.68 seconds. Sanders and Whipple are the 20th ranked team as of the Belen rodeo.

Sanders did not rank in calf-roping at the Belen rodeo, but is ranked seventh overall in the NMHSRA.

The All-Around Cowboy was a three-way split between Jett Sharp, Joshua Snyder and Seth Hall. The All-Around Cowgirl was awarded to Samantha Martinez.

A tentative calendar for the 2008 spring season of NMHSRA events is posted on their website at www.nmhighschoolrodeo.com.
