Zorillos finish second

Submitted to El Defensor Chieftain By Janet Coursey

Five U-10 boys teams participated in a scaled-down "M" Mountain Tournament, hosted by Socorro's American Youth Soccer Organization, this past weekend, May 1-3, in Sedillo Park, with exhibition matches played by the U-10 girls.

Alternating sun and clouds, a light breeze and brief shower kept the temperature perfect for active play.

The Socorro Zorrillos were split into two teams for the event and were coached by J.P. Moore and Paul Fuierer. The Zorillos hosted the Outlaws, from Belen, the Hotshots, from Alamogordo, and AYSO Select, from El Paso, in the round-robin competition.

El Paso won first-place with four wins including three shut-outs and the Zorrillos "O" team won second-place with three wins, all shut-outs.

The Zorrillos "O" team lost its final game 1-0 to El Paso, despite at least seven shots on goal, one of which hit the post, and dominated in possession.

The City of Socorro sponsored the event and prepared the fields while the Tourism department donated gift bags and prizes. Seven local referees volunteered their service for the matches. The Chamber of Commerce organized discounts on hotels and meals for visitors. Michael Olguin was tournament director for AYSO Region 364.
