Socorro offers shelter and donations to Ruidoso Fire evacuees

Socorro County, the City of Socorro and local groups are coordinating efforts and resources to assist Ruidoso evacuees of the Salt and South Fork Fires.

As of 9:39 p.m. June 18, the South Fork Fire was estimated at 15,276 acres with 0% containment and approximately 1,400 structures lost. The Salt Fire was at an estimated 5,557 acres, with a 30 % chance of precipitation today.

Donations:

A donation facility has been set up at the Socorro County Fairgrounds, Zimmerman Hall located at Fairgrounds Road, Socorro, NM 87801. If you have donations of good, used, wearable clothing & shoes. Those donations can be made through the Donations Coordinator, Cynthia Canner (505) 263-1274.

The Mescalero Apache Tribe is seeking donations of phone chargers, blankets, diapers, wipes, baby formula, feminine hygiene products, general hygiene products, water etc. Contact Kendra Lee Burgoon at (575) 842-9579, she will be making her first trip to take donations at noon on June 20, and will continue to make trips as donations come in.

Adobe Gifts in Quemado is collecting items for Ruidoso Humane society including donations of pet food, pet toys and bedding, blankets, sheets, clothing etc. Please contact, Marilyn Lyons at (505)280-1294 or Bridget Cauzza (760)415-2162. They are taking donations, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 3462 Highway 60 in Quemado.

Shelter:

Evacuee shelter will be set up at Finley Gym on June 18, 2024 opening at 1pm. The shelter is located at 202 McCutcheon Avenue, Socorro NM 87801. Food, Water, cots, & hygiene products can be accessed at this site. Please contact Michael Padilla at (575) 418-7605 or Polo Pineda (575) 418-5222 with the City of Socorro.

Shelter for those with animals:

The City of Socorro Sports & Rodeo Complex can accommodate large animal holding and has RV sites available. Please contact Steve Mathieu (575) 835-1844.

Livestock information

From the New Mexico Department of Agriculture posted June 19. Please do not self-dispatch trailers to Ruidoso Downs Race Track. If you wish to assist with horse evacuations from the Ruidoso Downs Race Track, please call the Agro Guard hotline at 575-646-9191.

Your willingness to help is appreciated! If you have gathered hay to help livestock affected by the South Fork and Salt Fires, please send your contact information and information on available supplies you may have, including amount and type available, to the New Mexico Department of Agriculture’s Hay Hotline at hayhotline@nmda.nmsu.edu, or call the Agro Guard hotline at 575-646-9191. Please hold your donations until you have been notified that distribution has been coordinated. Small donations of pet food for companion animals (e.g. cats, dogs) affected by the South Fork and Salt Fires can be sent to Salvation Army Roswell Armory, located at 612 W. College Blvd. Large donations of pet food should be sent to a food bank or pet rescue.
